The first question every Cebu trip asks is not where to eat or what to see. It is which side of the bridge to sleep on. Metro Cebu is really three cities in a row, Cebu City, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu on Mactan Island, and the wrong choice adds an hour of traffic to every day of your stay.

Here is the short version, then the detail. All hotels, pension houses and hostels on ListGOPH are pinned on the Explore map, so once you have picked an area you can see exactly what is where.

Cebu City: the base for the city itself

Cebu City is big, so where in Cebu City matters.

Business Park and IT Park

Ayala Center, the offices and most of the newer restaurants and bars are here. Walkable, safe late, pricier. The Partridge Guesthouse on Pedro Calomarde Street puts you a few minutes from Ayala without a hotel-tower price.

North Reclamation Area

Next to SM City Cebu and the port, with quick access to Mandaue. Queensland and Centennial Homes are the practical, mid-range choices here.

Colon and downtown

The oldest street in the Philippines, the basilica, the fort, Carbon market, and the cheapest beds in the city. Jacynth Urban Hotel on Colon Street, 8th Street Hostel for dorm beds, and RedDoorz Logarta Street for a budget private room. Noisy, alive, and honest about it.

South Road Properties

The reclaimed strip along the coast, home to SM Seaside and the highway south. Fili Hotel is the anchor here, and the right pick if you are leaving for Moalboal or Oslob at dawn.

Mandaue: between everything

Mandaue is where Cebu does business. It is also, quietly, the most convenient base in the metro: fifteen minutes to the airport bridge, fifteen minutes to IT Park, and rates a notch below Cebu City for the same room.

Mactan: the beach and the airport

Lapu-Lapu City covers Mactan Island: the airport, the resorts along the east coast, the dive shops and the Newtown development. Stay here if the sea is the point, or if your flight is at six in the morning.

The catch: Mactan to Cebu City is twenty-five minutes at midday and well over an hour at rush hour, in both directions. If you plan to be in the city every evening, do not stay on the island.

Pension house, hostel or hotel?

Pension houses are Cebu's own category: family-run, private rooms, air conditioning, usually no breakfast, and prices well under a hotel. They are the best value in the metro for a stay of more than two nights. Hostels mean dorm beds and a common room, and Cebu's are friendly and cheap. Hotels buy you a front desk at 3 AM and a breakfast buffet. Decide what you will actually use.

Before you book

  • Look at the pin, not the address. "Mandaue" covers a lot of ground. Open the listing and see how far it really is from where you will spend your days.
  • Read the reviews and the review count. A 4.6 from forty guests tells you more than a 5.0 from one.
  • Check the hours and contact details on the listing and call ahead for late arrivals; smaller pension houses lock the gate.
  • Book direct where you can. Many listings take bookings on ListGOPH directly, and the owner sees your request at once.
